La Station — Gare des Mines
Contemporary techno alongside landmark electroacoustic recordings — the oldest from around 1956, the newest released the day before.
A DJ set at La Station — Gare des Mines in the north of Paris, for Dreamachine, moving between contemporary techno and landmark electronic and electroacoustic recordings — Éliane Radigue and Iannis Xenakis alongside records released the same week. The oldest material dates from around 1956; the newest arrived the day before the show.
Texture, density, spatial character and recording quality carried the set the way a key change carries another one: tape noise against a mastered kick, a long drone opening underneath a tight modern rhythm. Not nostalgia, and not eclecticism for its own sake — the interest was in where those recordings meet.
Watching a room dance to pieces written for a concert hall was the best part of the night.
